"Sporty" Joe Leighton
One of the pioneers of children’s gymnastics and fitness in
Singapore, Joe hails from Toronto, Canada.
From an early age of 8, Joe has trained for competitive swimming, springboard
diving and gymnastics.
During the summers in Ontario, Joe provided his services at the Canadian
Adventure Camp as a counselor and gymnastics coach to children of all
ages and also performed at Canada’s Wonderland as an acrobatic
stunt performer.
With a degree in Psychology from Upper Iowa University and advance National
Coaching Certification, Joe has coached many local athletes since coming
to Singapore in 1984, including many who have participated in National
Schools Championships and the South East Asian Games (SEA Games). He
has coached and worked with many children who have represented Singapore
in National Schools and South East Asian Games.
In addition to being the Head of Elementary PE and Gross Motor Development
at The Canadian International School in Singapore, Joe has also been
running his own consultancy since 1983.
He has also been involved in numerous activities to promote Singapore’s
Healthy Lifestyle Campaign, National Day celebrations, Arts Festivals,
as well as helping out charity organizations such as the Community Chest
of Singapore, the Canossa Convent for the Hearing Impaired.
Joe is a frequent contributor and speaker at health and fitness
conventions around Asia. He was involved in the Bodylife Fitness
Convention held at the Grand Hyatt Singapore. He has presented at the
Kendang Kerbau
Women’s
and Children’s Hospital, giving a talk on How To Raise
An Active Child. Joe has also appeared on various TV and radio programmes,
and has been featured in several magazine and newspaper articles.
Most recently Joe has co-authored a complete teacher's guide to movement
skills for children intitled GymFlash and
was a featured speaker at the AsiaFit convention held in Beijing,
China.
Joe Leighton is an active member of Singapore Gymnastics and a co-opted
member of the Singapore Gymnastics Committee.
